Use Cases & Benefits
- Creates local Kubernetes clusters using Docker container nodes for testing and development purposes.
- Enables easy, reproducible multi-node Kubernetes clusters on Linux, macOS, and Windows without requiring full VM setups.
- Use for testing Kubernetes itself or Kubernetes-related projects in isolated local environments.
- Use for continuous integration pipelines that require ephemeral Kubernetes clusters for automated testing.
- Use for local development to simulate multi-node Kubernetes clusters without cloud infrastructure.

From the README
kind is a tool for running local Kubernetes clusters using Docker container "nodes". kind was primarily designed for testing Kubernetes itself, but may be used for local development or CI.
If you have go 1.16+ and docker, podman or nerdctl installed
go install sigs.k8s.io/[email protected] && kind create clusteris all you need!kind bootstraps each "node" with kubeadm. For more details see the design documentation.
NOTE: kind is still a work in progress, see the 1.0 roadmap.
For a complete install guide see the documentation here.
You can install kind with
go install sigs.k8s.io/[email protected].NOTE: please use the latest go to do this. KIND is developed with the latest stable go, see
.go-versionfor the exact version we're using. This will put
kindin$(go env GOPATH)/bin. If you encounter the errorkind: command not foundafter installation then you may need to either add that directory to your$PATHas shown here or do a manual installation by cloning the repo and runmake buildfrom the repository.
