Use Cases & Benefits
- Streams low-latency desktop video and audio from Linux, macOS, or Windows to a web browser using H.264 over WebSocket with WebCodecs decoding.
- Delivers extremely fast 60 FPS streaming with median latency as low as 12 ms, outperforming common VNC and noVNC solutions while using moderate CPU resources.
- Use for remote desktop access in web browsers requiring high frame rates and low latency, such as interactive graphical applications or video playback.
- Use for automated screen capture and recording workflows via HTTP API for screenshots and MP4 clips without extra encoding overhead.
- Use for secure remote desktop sharing with built-in password authentication and fine-grained control over input, clipboard, file transfer, and audio streaming.

From the README
Low-latency desktop streaming for the browser, written in Rust. voxl streams an X11 display, a Mac's screen or a Windows desktop as H.264 over a WebSocket to a small web client that decodes with WebCodecs, with input, clipboard, audio, microphone, file and folder transfer and dynamic resolution.
Open the link it prints. On a Mac or a Windows PC,
voxlstreams that machine's own screen instead; see macOS and Windows. In every test below voxl averages 60 FPS with a median latency of 12–99 ms; noVNC averages under 8 FPS.
A 16 vCPU AMD EPYC 9334 VM (no GPU), 2560x1600 Xvfb desktop, same workloads, each stream decoded by a native client that reads a pixel marker drawn into the content. Cells are FPS (worst second), then latency p50/p99 from the content being drawn to the frame being decoded. voxl's column is its best run of each test. To reproduce, see
bench/.
